Du Plessis Analyzes Pant's T20 Performance

In a recent discussion, South African cricket veteran Faf Du Plessis praised Rishabh Pant, the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), for his impressive skill set and diverse shot selection. However, he pointed out that Pant's challenges in international T20 cricket stem from a tendency to be overly anxious at times.

Du Plessis advised the young wicketkeeper-batter to avoid overthinking his shots, which could lead to greater consistency in his performance.

This IPL season is crucial for Pant, who gained fame in the late 2010s due to his explosive batting style. Despite this, his T20I statistics are underwhelming, with only 1,209 runs from 66 innings, averaging 23.25 and a strike rate of 127.26, including three half-centuries. With India's recent T20 World Cup victory and the emergence of other wicketkeeper-batters like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, Pant finds himself lower in the T20I hierarchy as the 2028 World Cup approaches.

Last season's disappointing debut for LSG did not help his cause. As the most expensive player in IPL history at Rs 27 crores, Pant's performance fell short of expectations, accumulating just 269 runs in 13 innings, averaging 24.45 with a strike rate of 133.16, including one century and one fifty, with his highest score being 118* against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

During an appearance on JioStar's 'IPL Today Live', Du Plessis discussed the stark difference between Pant's Test cricket success and his T20 struggles, questioning how a player with such a wide array of shots could face difficulties in the shorter format. He noted that Pant's frantic approach at the crease might be contributing to his inconsistent T20I form.

Du Plessis remarked, "Rishabh Pant possesses immense talent. When you observe him in Test matches, it's clear he has a full repertoire of shots. However, in T20 cricket, having too many options can be counterproductive. Successful T20 players typically have a clear game plan and an understanding of their scoring areas and weaknesses."

He added, "With Pant, there's a sense of unpredictability; he seems on the verge of getting out at any moment due to his frantic style. It's surprising that his T20 strike rate hovers around 130, especially considering his capabilities. We often expect him to replicate his Test performances in T20s, but that may not be realistic."

Du Plessis also suggested that given the explosive opening partnership of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh, along with Nicholas Pooran's aggressive batting, Pant should ideally bat at number three for LSG this season.

"The success of Marsh and Markram at the top last season indicates that Pant could thrive at number three. The statistics support this, and I envision him batting there while Pooran moves down to number four," he explained.

Du Plessis concluded by emphasizing that Pant's shot selection appears chaotic and that he needs to take time to develop a solid game plan rather than premeditating every shot. "While he may hit some impressive sixes, he has the ability to adapt and score in various areas. It's crucial for him to focus on his initial six balls and transition from being a highlight player to a high-impact contributor in terms of his overall performance," he stated.
