Inaugural Day of the Indian Pickleball League

The Indian Pickleball League (IPBL), the sole official league endorsed by the Indian Pickleball Association under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, made a spectacular debut with an electrifying opening day. Teams like Lucknow Leopards, Hyderabad Royals, and Chennai Super Warriors showcased impressive performances, as reported by the IPBL.

The first match saw Lucknow triumph over Bengaluru Blasters with a score of 4-1, featuring a standout performance by India's top player Aditya Ruhela, who defeated Vietnamese competitor Phuc Huynh 15-10. This victory set the tone for the day. In the subsequent match, Hyderabad Royals achieved a solid 4-2 victory against Capital Warriors Gurgaon, winning all four initial matches before the Warriors managed a spirited comeback in the Grand Rally. Later, Chennai Super Warriors rebounded from an early loss to dominate the Mumbai Smashers with a 5-1 win.

Earlier in the day, a significant milestone in Indian sports was marked as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta officially launched the inaugural season of the IPBL at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp and unveiling of the league trophy signified the beginning of this new chapter, highlighting Delhi's dedication to promoting emerging sports and fostering an inclusive sporting culture.

“India has always embraced sports, and there is a growing interest in exploring new games. With the introduction of Pickleball, we are expanding our sports landscape. I assure you that we will implement Pickleball in Delhi schools to ensure its success among our youth,” stated Rekha Gupta, as per the IPBL release.

Lucknow Leopards made a strong impression in the IPBL, securing a 4-1 victory over Bengaluru Blasters. Ruhela's decisive 15-10 win against Huynh set the pace for the match. Although Bengaluru managed to recover briefly in men's doubles, Lucknow dominated thereafter, with Shelby Bates winning women's singles 15-5 and later teaming with Pearl Amalsadiwala for a hard-fought 15-13 doubles victory. A 21-17 Grand Rally concluded the match, leading to celebrations as Ryler Deheart and Bates were named Players of the Tie.

Hyderabad Royals also made a statement with a 4-2 win against Capital Warriors Gurgaon. Ben Newell gained early momentum with a narrow 15-13 victory, followed by a successful men's doubles match alongside Divyanshu Kataria. Veteran player Megan Fudge added to the excitement with a thrilling 15-14 singles win and a 15-10 victory in women's doubles with Snehal Patil. Although Gurgaon won the Grand Rally, Hyderabad had already secured the tie, with Newell and Fudge earning accolades as Best Male and Female Players of the Tie, respectively.

In the final match of the day, Chennai Super Warriors rallied from an early setback to defeat the Mumbai Smashers 5-1. DUPR Men’s Singles World No. 3 Quang Duong gave the Smashers a strong start with a 15-12 win over Mitchell Hargreaves. However, Hargreaves and Harsh Mehta turned the tide by winning men’s doubles 15-9. Chennai then surged ahead, with Roos van Reek winning women's singles and the duo of van Reek and Aaliya clinching women's doubles. A 21-18 victory in the Grand Rally capped off their successful night, with van Reek and Mehta being recognized as Players of the Tie.

Looking ahead, Hyderabad and Lucknow aim to maintain their winning streaks as they face Chennai Super Warriors and Mumbai Smashers, respectively, on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bengaluru Blasters and Capital Warriors Gurgaon will seek to kick off their campaigns against each other in the day's final match.
