Highlights from the Championships

The 8th Indian Open International Para Athletics Championships 2026 kicked off in Bengaluru, Karnataka, showcasing outstanding performances from para athletes nationwide. The first day featured thrilling finishes and impressive displays in various field events.


In the Men's 100m T12 race, Chaitanya Pathak from Maharashtra clinched the gold medal with a time of 11.39 seconds. Vishu Vishu from Haryana closely followed to secure silver in 11.42 seconds, while Gowtham Karanam from Andhra Pradesh took home the bronze with a time of 11.75 seconds.


The Men's 100m T47 category saw Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath from Kerala sprint to victory, finishing in 10.63 seconds. Dilip Gavit from Maharashtra earned silver with a time of 10.64 seconds, and Babu Janu Pandaramise from Karnataka captured bronze in 11.19 seconds.


In the Men's 100m T63 event, Vivek Sharma from Punjab won gold with a time of 12.92 seconds. Arpit from Haryana secured silver in 13.00 seconds, while Sandeep Kumar from Uttar Pradesh took bronze with a time of 13.40 seconds.


Nishad Kumar from Himachal Pradesh excelled in the Men's Long Jump T47, achieving a remarkable jump of 7.34m to win gold. Arjun Singh from Rajasthan earned silver with a jump of 6.81m, and Safran Mohammadu from Sri Lanka secured bronze with a distance of 6.72m.


The Men's Discus Throw F64 event featured a tight competition, with Pardeep Kumar from S.S.C.B. winning gold with a throw of 50.47m. Devender Kumar from Haryana claimed silver with 50.44m, while Rakesh from S.S.C.B. took bronze with a throw of 49.67m.


In the Women's Shot Put F57, Sharmila from Haryana emerged victorious with a throw of 9.86m. Kanchugarakoppa Shyla Shilpa from Karnataka won silver with 6.67m, and Poonam Sharma from Haryana secured bronze with a throw of 6.46m.


Karnataka's Rakshitha Raju dominated the Women's 1500m T11 event, winning gold in 5:17.54. Shalini Chaudhary from Rajasthan earned silver with a time of 6:07.55, while Gulnaz Zhuzbaeva from Kyrgyzstan took bronze in 6:19.58.


The championship is set to continue until May 28 in Bengaluru, featuring elite para athletes from India and abroad competing in various track and field events.
