Tribute to Nepal's Flood Victims
Bruges, Belgium - On September 7, European football is set to honor the victims of the catastrophic flash floods that hit Nepal on August 26. A moment of silence will be observed prior to all UEFA Champions League matches this week.
In a show of solidarity, a banner with the message "You are not alone, Nepal" will be prominently displayed at these matches, demonstrating support for those affected by this tragedy.
According to a statement from UEFA, "A moment of silence will be held, and a banner will be displayed as a sign of solidarity and support ahead of all UEFA Champions League matches this week. The banner will carry the message 'You are not alone, Nepal.'"
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin emphasized that the entire European football community stands united in expressing condolences and support for the people of Nepal.
"The entire European football family will come together before this week's matches to convey our deepest sympathies and support to the people of Nepal. We wish them strength and resilience as they work to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath," stated the UEFA President.
As of now, the death toll from the devastating floods has reached 1,355, according to the latest reports from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
Today, Nepal is observing a national day of mourning to remember those who lost their lives in the floods. A Cabinet meeting on September 3, held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, decided to mark this day in honor of the flood victims.
In line with this, the national flag is being flown at half-mast at government offices throughout the country, as well as at Nepali embassies and diplomatic missions worldwide. The Bhotekoshi flood, which struck Rasuwa, resulted in significant loss of life and extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and other vital infrastructure.
The disaster also impacted downstream regions along the Trishuli River, including parts of Nuwakot and Dhading, leading to community displacements and disruptions in transport, electricity, water supply, and other essential services.
Search and rescue operations, relief distribution, and infrastructure restoration efforts are ongoing in the affected areas, with national security agencies, government authorities, local communities, and international partners collaborating in the response.
