Erling Haaland Shines on FIFA World Cup Debut with Historic Multi-Goal Match
Haaland's Historic Debut for Norway
Massachusetts [US], June 17: Erling Haaland, the Manchester City sensation, etched his name in history during his FIFA World Cup debut by becoming the first male player from Norway to score multiple goals in a single match at the tournament. He achieved this remarkable feat by netting twice within the first 43 minutes against Iraq, according to insights from ESPN.
His outstanding performance helped Norway secure a decisive 4-1 victory, marking their first win in the World Cup after a 28-year hiatus.
With this triumph, Norway ascended to the top of Group I, while France, who earlier defeated Senegal 3-1, slipped to second place.
The match began with Iraq showing promise, creating several early opportunities, including a close-range header from Aymen Hussein that went over the bar and a long-range shot from Ali Al Hamadi that sailed high.
Norway took the lead in the 29th minute when Haaland found himself in the perfect position at the back post to convert a low cross from David Moller Wolfe.
Iraq responded ten minutes later, with Hussein scoring a powerful header from Amir Al Ammari's cross, but Norway quickly regained the lead before halftime. Haaland pressured goalkeeper Jalal Hassan into a mistake, resulting in an own goal.
Despite Iraq's attempts to equalize before the break, Norway maintained their lead as they headed into halftime.
The second half featured fewer clear chances, but Norway extended their advantage in the 76th minute when Ostigard scored with a header from a corner following an effort from Kristian Thorstvedt.
Haaland nearly completed his hat-trick late in the game after intercepting a poor back pass, but Hassan was quick to deny him. Nevertheless, Haaland contributed to the final goal, as his late header led to an unfortunate own goal by Hussein deep into stoppage time.
