England's U19 Squad Announced for World Cup
London [UK], December 24: The England cricket team has revealed its lineup for the upcoming ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup. Somerset's wicketkeeper-batter, Thomas Rew, who recently participated in the England Lions tour of Australia, will lead the team as captain.
Farhan Ahmed, who took charge of the U19 squad during Rew's absence in a recent seven-match Youth ODI series against the West Indies, has been appointed as vice-captain, according to the ICC.
Ali Farooq, a left-arm spinner, receives his first call-up to the squad. Head coach Michael Yardy expressed confidence in the team's balance heading into the tournament.
Yardy stated, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the selected players to don the England jersey at a World Cup and strive to achieve something remarkable.”
He further added, “Our squad is well-rounded, featuring a core group of players with county experience who have built strong relationships while playing together for the U19s, which will be beneficial during the tournament.”
“I want the players to relish the chance to compete at a World Cup in a beautiful country like Zimbabwe and to embrace the opportunity to showcase their skills against various nations,” Yardy concluded.
The England Under-19 team will be stationed in Zimbabwe and is placed in Group C of the 16-team tournament. They will kick off their campaign against Pakistan in Harare on Friday, January 16, followed by matches against co-hosts Zimbabwe and Scotland. The top three teams from the group stage will advance to the next round.
