England's Squad Changes Ahead of Third Test

London [UK], June 23: For the third and final Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, starting Thursday, England has announced four alterations to their playing XI. Captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson are making their return after being sidelined due to an incident at a Chelsea nightclub two weeks ago.

Additionally, spinner Shoaib Bashir has been brought back into the team, as the anticipated warm weather at Trent Bridge has led England to reinstate their primary slow bowler.

Bashir was omitted during England's 253-run loss at The Oval and did not bowl in the series opener at Lord's. His inclusion indicates a strategic shift towards spin bowling as England aims to equalize the series in this final match.

Interestingly, Ollie Robinson, who was the Player of the Match in the Lord's Test, has not been included in the XI, despite being cleared to play after recovering from a knee issue that kept him out of the second Test.

Wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith also returns after missing the Oval Test due to the birth of his second child. He replaces James Rew, who had a challenging debut at The Oval and has since been left out of England's 15-man squad for the series finale.

Following their defeat at The Oval, England has now lost six out of their last seven Tests, a streak that dates back to India's series-tying win at the same venue in September 2025. Despite these disappointing results, head coach Brendon McCullum emphasized the importance of focusing on the team's processes and long-term growth rather than immediate results.

“What will be will be from a results perspective. We’re eager to win, but ultimately, we must maintain our composure and clarity to make the right decisions that will give us the best chance of success,” he stated, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

England's XI for the third Test includes: 1 Ben Duckett, 2 Emilio Gay, 3 Jacob Bethell, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jamie Smith (wk), 7 Ben Stokes (capt), 8 Gus Atkinson, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Josh Tongue, 11 Shoaib Bashir.
