Historic Win in Kolkata Derby

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], March 23: In a stunning display, East Bengal FC triumphed over Mohammedan Sporting Club with a remarkable 7-0 scoreline during the Indian Super League 2025-26 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday.

This victory not only sets a record for the largest margin in the history of their encounters but also matches the highest margin in ISL history, equaling FC Goa's 7-0 win against Mumbai City FC in 2015, as reported.

With this win, the Red and Gold Brigade ascended to fourth place in the league standings, accumulating 11 points from six matches, while Mohammedan SC remains at the bottom, still seeking their first points after five matches. Anwar Ali was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, which included scoring two goals.

East Bengal started the match with intense pressure, and their efforts bore fruit in the sixth minute when Anwar Ali struck a long-range left-footed shot that slipped past Mohammedan keeper Padam Chettri, putting the hosts ahead 1-0.

The lead was doubled in the 14th minute when a foul by Mohammedan's Sajjad Hussain on Miguel Figueira resulted in a penalty. Youssef Ezzejjari confidently converted the penalty, extending the lead to 2-0.

East Bengal continued to dominate, with Edmund Lalrindika testing the Mohammedan keeper midway through the first half. Mohammedan had a brief chance in the 29th minute, but Md Fardin's shot was easily saved by Prabhsukhan Gill.

The match took a turn when Mohammedan's Joseph Lalmuanawma received a second yellow card, leading to his dismissal. Captain Saul Crespo converted the resulting penalty in the 38th minute, making it 3-0.

Before halftime, East Bengal nearly scored again when PV Vishnu hit the crossbar, leaving the score at 3-0 as they headed into the break.

The second half saw East Bengal maintain their dominance. In the 54th minute, Ezzejjari scored his second penalty of the match, marking a unique achievement of three penalties scored by a single team in one ISL match after Miguel Figueira was fouled in the box.

Despite being a man down, Mohammedan tried to respond, with Juwel Mazumder missing a close-range opportunity in the 68th minute. East Bengal, however, continued to create chances, with Lalhlansanga narrowly missing a header from an Anwar Ali cross.

The fifth goal came in the 75th minute when PV Vishnu scored from close range following a corner kick, further extending the lead.

Just four minutes later, Anwar Ali netted his second goal of the night with a composed finish from inside the box after receiving a pass from Mahesh Naorem.

In the dying moments of the match, substitute Nandha Kumar capped off the evening with a seventh goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time, sealing a comprehensive 7-0 victory for East Bengal in the Kolkata derby.

The ISL 2025-26 season will resume on April 3, 2026, after the international break, with Mehrajuddin Wadoo's team set to face Punjab FC in New Delhi, who currently sit seventh in the standings with eight points and a game in hand.
