Vengsarkar's Outrage Over Selection Decisions
Former Indian selector Dilip Vengsarkar expressed his disappointment with the BCCI selectors for not including Auqib Nabi in the upcoming Test against Afghanistan. Nabi had an outstanding season in the 2025-2026 Ranji Trophy, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker, claiming 60 wickets in just 10 matches with an impressive average of 12.56. His exceptional performance earned him the title of player of the tournament, helping Jammu and Kashmir secure a historic championship.
Vengsarkar criticized the selectors, stating, "The decision to overlook him is completely absurd and perplexing. What kind of selection process is this? It is simply unacceptable and unjust." He further emphasized Nabi's remarkable achievement, noting, "Can you imagine Nabi's situation? He took 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy and has worked tirelessly for this opportunity, deserving a spot over others."
Concerns Over Domestic Cricket's Relevance
'Scrap Domestic Cricket': Vengsarkar's Bold Statement
The 70-year-old questioned the significance of domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy if standout performances like Nabi's continue to be disregarded. He stated, "If performances in domestic cricket are not considered, then the BCCI should abolish domestic cricket altogether." Nabi had also taken 44 wickets at an average of 13.27 in the previous Ranji season but was still overlooked. While Nabi may not be the fastest bowler, Vengsarkar believes that wicket-taking ability should be the primary criterion for selection.
"You select a bowler based on their ability to take wickets. Even if he bowls at 130 km/h, what matters is his effectiveness in claiming wickets. This young player has consistently demonstrated his wicket-taking prowess," he added. Vengsarkar argued that this was the perfect moment to nurture Nabi's talent, stating, "When a player is in form, you must give them the chance immediately. Waiting until they lose confidence, fitness, or motivation is not the way to go."

However, when selecting a Test team in India, you don't typically choose many seamers, and we opted for the three we selected," Agarkar explained. He acknowledged Nabi's impressive performances for Jammu and Kashmir, stating, "There is no doubt he has had some remarkable outings."
