Dilip Gavit's Ambitious Goals Following CWG Success
New Delhi, August 4: Indian para-athlete Dilip Gavit is determined to secure two gold medals at the upcoming Asian Para Games after achieving a remarkable victory in the 100 m T47 event at the recently held Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.
During the CWG 2026, India excelled in athletics, bringing home a total of 16 medals, which included three golds, seven silvers, and six bronzes. Notably, all three gold medals were won in para-athletics, with Gavit setting a new CWG record by finishing the men’s 100 m T47 event in just 10.71 seconds.
In an interview, Gavit expressed his satisfaction with his performance and his aspirations for the Asian Games, aiming for gold in both the 100 m and 400 m events. He acknowledged the difficulties faced in Glasgow and appreciated the support provided by the government to athletes.
“I am thrilled to have completed the 100 meters at the CWG, representing my country and setting a record while winning gold. My goal for the Asian Games is to clinch gold in both the 100 meters and 400 meters,” he stated.
“The support from the PCI (Paralympic Committee of India), SAI (Sports Authority of India), and the central government has been invaluable for our training, nutrition, and recovery. However, the weather in Glasgow posed significant challenges, as it was quite cold,” he added.
Fellow para-athlete Mohammed Basil, who earned a silver medal in the same event with a time of 10.83 seconds, shared similar thoughts regarding the tough weather conditions in Glasgow.
“This was my first competition, and I am very pleased, despite the challenging weather. I look forward to returning for future competitions,” he remarked.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games adopted a compact format, resulting in the exclusion of several major Indian medal-winning sports such as shooting, wrestling, and badminton.
India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the medals table, amassing a total of 39 medals, which included 13 golds, 17 silvers, and nine bronzes. The country officially commenced its preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad, as the Commonwealth Games Flag was ceremonially handed over during a spectacular Closing Ceremony that celebrated the conclusion of Glasgow 2026 and looked forward to the historic centenary edition of the Games.
