Montevideo [Uruguay], August 7: Renowned Uruguayan football icon Diego Forlan has been appointed as the head coach for both the senior national team and the under-20 squad.
Forlan, who proudly represented Uruguay from 2002 to 2014 and played for prestigious clubs such as Manchester United, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan, is a pivotal figure in the nation's football legacy. His return comes after a disappointing group stage exit for Uruguay in the FIFA World Cup, where the two-time champions did not secure a single victory, marking their poorest performance in the tournament's history.
The Uruguayan Football Association announced, “We are thrilled to welcome Diego Forlan back to the Uruguayan National Team. A key figure in La Celeste's history, he embarks on a new journey as the head coach for both the Under-20 and Senior National Teams.”
“Forlan is back to where he made a lasting impact. As a role model and an emblem of a remarkable generation, the best player of the 2010 South Africa World Cup returns to share his expertise, leadership, and deep understanding of international football in a technical capacity,” the statement continued.
During his illustrious career, Forlan played 112 matches for Uruguay, netting 36 goals, winning the Copa America in 2011, and playing a vital role in their fourth-place finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he scored five goals.
He will immediately start working with the under-20 team, focusing on nurturing young talent and facilitating their transition to the senior squad. Forlan will collaborate with assistant coaches Santiago Espasandin and Diego Perez, physical trainer Marco Mansulino, goalkeeping coach Ignacio Bordad, and video analyst Gabriel Skrilec.
Forlan's first major task with the senior team will occur during the international window in September-October, where Uruguay will engage in FIFA friendly matches. This marks the dawn of a new chapter with one of the nation's greatest legends at the helm.
