Didier Deschamps Discusses France's World Cup Pressure Ahead of Semi-Final
France's World Cup Journey Under Pressure
Boston [US], July 10: Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national team, emphasized the exceptional pressure surrounding Les Bleus' World Cup journey, noting that expectations have reached unprecedented levels this time around.
Reflecting on past tournaments, Deschamps mentioned that France entered the 2018 World Cup as underdogs and returned in 2022 as the reigning champions. However, this year, they are considered one of the top contenders before the tournament even begins.
He commended his players for maintaining their composure under such pressure, asserting that their focus remains solely on the upcoming semi-final scheduled for July 14, without getting distracted by future matches.
These comments were made during a press conference following France's 2-0 win over Morocco, which secured their spot in the semi-finals against either Spain or Belgium.
A victory in this match would mark France's third consecutive appearance in a World Cup final, following their success in 2018 and a narrow loss in the 2022 final.
Deschamps remarked, "What has changed since 2018 and 2022? In 2018, we were not expected to succeed. In 2022, we were the defending champions, and often, defending champions exit in the last 16. This time, everyone anticipated our success before the tournament began."
Since taking the helm in 2012, Deschamps has led France to the semi-finals of either a European Championship or a World Cup five times out of seven, with the exceptions being the 2014 World Cup and the 2020 Euros, which took place in 2021.
He added, "My players are accustomed to this level of expectation and will not let it overwhelm them. Right now, our focus is solely on July 14, which is a significant date (Bastille Day)."
Deschamps also praised the team's tactical execution, highlighting their relentless pressing against Morocco, which limited the opposition's options and forced them to expend energy, ultimately leading to their breakdown.
"We executed our strategy perfectly to contain them. We pressured them and made them work hard, which left them fatigued," he concluded.
This victory concludes Morocco's remarkable World Cup journey, while France inches closer to reclaiming their title.
