Devdutt Padikkal Shines with Unbeaten 131 in Test Comeback Against Sri Lanka

Padikkal's Stellar Performance on Day One

Devdutt Padikkal made a remarkable return to Test cricket, scoring an impressive unbeaten 131, which propelled India to a strong position of 288 for two at the end of the first day against Sri Lanka.

This match marked Padikkal's first Test appearance since facing Australia in Perth back in 2024, showcasing his growth and maturity as a batsman by achieving his first international century in just 134 balls.

At stumps, Rishabh Pant was supporting him with a score of 27, having formed an unbroken partnership of 52 runs for the third wicket.

Prior to his retirement due to injury, KL Rahul contributed 77 runs off 162 balls, partnering with Padikkal to accumulate 150 runs for the second wicket, putting Sri Lanka under significant pressure.

Throughout their partnership, Padikkal was the standout performer, scoring freely around the wicket. His initial 20 runs came at a strike rate nearing 100 before he settled into a more measured approach.

Padikkal faced a challenging spell against debutant Keshara Nuwantha, who was brought in to bowl immediately after Padikkal's arrival at the crease.

While the strategy to use an off-spinner against a left-handed batsman was sound, it did not yield the expected results for the Sri Lankan team.

Nuwantha did induce an outside edge from Padikkal, but it fell short of the lone slip fielder. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old showed great determination to move past that moment.

He quickly established dominance over Nuwantha, hitting a four and later not allowing Sri Lanka's leading left-arm spinner, Prabath Jayasuriya, to find his rhythm.

Padikkal reached his fifty in 81 balls, hitting Jayasuriya for a six with a well-timed shot over long-on, followed by a powerful punch through the covers for another boundary.

Meanwhile, Rahul maintained his composed style, effectively neutralizing the Sri Lankan bowlers with his flat bat technique.

Rahul reached his half-century in 127 balls, showcasing his striking ability with a notable straight six off Jayasuriya that highlighted his timing and execution.

Despite a few tense moments against Lahiru Kumar, who tested him with pace early in his innings, both batsmen managed to maintain their focus, even through a rain delay that lasted an hour and 20 minutes before the second session.

The Sri Lankan bowlers struggled to find answers against the Indian duo, and Rahul had to leave the field briefly due to cramps.

Padikkal, who also faced dehydration as the day progressed, remained undeterred.

His recent form has been impressive, as evidenced by his 142 runs against the SLC XI in a warm-up match in Colombo last week, which solidified his selection for the Indian team after Sai Sudharsan's injury.

Padikkal seized this opportunity with authority, displaying patience at the crease and a wide range of shots against the spinners, including sweeps, aggressive charges, and well-placed punches.

The moment everyone awaited arrived when he nudged Kumara for a single to mid-off, completing his century with a quick sprint.

As the relentless Indian batting lineup continued to dominate, Sri Lanka finally managed to secure a wicket when Jayasuriya deceived Shubman Gill, who misjudged a lofted shot that was caught by Lahiru Udara.

Before this, Sri Lanka's only moment of joy came from a communication mishap between Rahul and Jaiswal (37 runs off 32 balls), leading to a run-out situation.

Despite this, the Indian batsmen's skill and the favorable pitch conditions rendered Sri Lanka's plans ineffective for the remainder of the day.
