In a thrilling start to their FIFA World Cup journey, German footballer Deniz Undav made headlines during his team's match against World Cup newcomers Curacao. He became only the third player from Germany to both score and assist in a World Cup match since 1966.

Curacao, making their World Cup debut, briefly unsettled the German squad by scoring first. However, the four-time champions quickly regained control, with Undav and Kai Havertz leading the charge to a staggering 7-1 victory. This defeat marks the largest margin for a debuting team in World Cup history since South Korea lost 0-9 to Hungary in 1954, according to statistics from Opta.

Coming off the bench, Undav not only scored but also provided two assists. As reported by ESPN, he is the second German player to achieve two assists in a World Cup match as a substitute, following Pierre Littbarski's performance against the UAE in 1990.

In the 69th minute, Undav assisted Brown, who volleyed the ball into the net, extending the lead to 5-1. Undav then scored his own goal in the 78th minute, marking his seventh goal in just ten international matches. The final goal came in the 88th minute from Havertz, who was set up by Undav.

Undav joins the ranks of Rudi Voller and Niclas Fullkrug as the third German to score and assist after coming off the bench. His three contributions as a substitute tie him for the most in a World Cup match since 1966, alongside notable players like James Rodriguez and Tim Cahill.

This match not only stands as the biggest win in the current FIFA World Cup but also allowed Germany to surpass Brazil as the all-time leading goal-scorers in World Cup history, with 239 goals compared to Brazil's 238. This victory marks the fourth instance of Germany scoring seven or more goals in a World Cup match, a record unmatched by any other team.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made history as well, becoming the oldest player to appear for Germany in a World Cup at 40 years and 79 days, having come out of retirement for this tournament.
