Delhi Capitals Triumph Over Lucknow Super Giants in IPL Opener
Delhi Capitals Secure Victory in IPL Opener
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 1: A remarkable partnership between Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs propelled the Delhi Capitals (DC) to a six-wicket victory against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
After LSG set a target of 141 runs in 18.4 overs, the match appeared to be heading towards a nail-biting finish. However, DC demonstrated their middle-order strength, successfully chasing down the target with 17 balls to spare. Despite a shaky start, Rizvi (70* off 47 balls) and Stubbs (39* off 32 balls) formed a crucial partnership that turned the game in DC's favor.
The chase began poorly for DC as Mohammed Shami, making his debut for LSG, dismissed KL Rahul on the very first ball, leaving DC in a precarious position. Following this, Mohsin Khan took out Nitish Rana (15), and Prince Yadav claimed two wickets in one over, including the crucial wicket of skipper Axar Patel for a duck, leaving DC struggling at 30/4 after just five overs.
Facing a challenging situation, Rizvi and Stubbs combined forces. They initially played cautiously during the middle overs before accelerating their scoring. Rizvi was particularly aggressive, reaching his half-century in just 37 balls. Their unbeaten partnership of 119 runs off 76 balls effectively sealed the match for DC.
Although LSG's bowlers, especially Mohsin Khan (1/19 in 4 overs) and debutant Prince Yadav (2/20 in 3 overs), put up a commendable fight, the target of 142 proved too small against the steady performance of Rizvi and Stubbs.
With this victory, Delhi Capitals have now achieved five consecutive wins against Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, marking them as the third team against whom DC has accomplished such a feat.
Previously, DC also secured five straight wins against Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2020 to 2023 and against Rajasthan Royals from 2018 to 2020, as noted by CricViz.
Sameer Rizvi was named Player of the Match for his outstanding innings. In the post-match interview, he credited his performance to the support from coaches and his familiarity with the local conditions. He expressed his intention to play aggressively during the powerplay but adjusted his strategy after early wickets fell, focusing on capitalizing on loose deliveries.
Earlier in the match, LSG batted first and managed to score 141 runs. Captain Rishabh Pant opened the innings alongside Mitchell Marsh. The pair started strong, but Pant's unfortunate dismissal triggered a collapse in the batting order. Marsh's straight drive deflected off Mukesh Kumar's hand, leading to Pant's run-out.
Despite Aiden Markram hitting a six and a four, he was dismissed by Axar Patel. T Natarajan quickly removed Ayush Badoni, and Nicholas Pooran failed to reach double digits, getting caught by Lungi Ngidi. Marsh's valiant effort of 35 runs off 28 balls, featuring three sixes and two fours, ended when he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, who also took the wicket of Mukul Choudhary.
Abdul Samad contributed 36 runs off 25 balls, forming a 33-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Shahbaz Ahmed, who remained not out on 15 runs off 16 balls. Lungi Ngidi's wickets of the tailenders limited LSG's innings to 141 runs.
For DC, Ngidi and Natarajan each took three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed two. Captain Axar Patel also contributed with a wicket of Markram.
