New Delhi, Sep 1: Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma expressed her emotions following a record-breaking performance in the opening match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 against Thailand. She has now become the leading wicket-taker in Women’s T20I cricket.
Entering the match in Dubai, Deepti was tied with Thailand's Thipatcha Putthawong at 170 wickets and needed just one more to take the record for herself. She achieved this milestone in remarkable fashion, finishing with outstanding figures of 3 wickets for no runs in just 1.1 overs, bringing her total to 171 wickets.
After her historic feat, Deepti shared her feelings on X, stating, “Yesterday was a day filled with emotion and gratitude. Some achievements remind you of how fortunate you are to pursue your passion. I am dedicated to my team and fans, aiming to play with the same enthusiasm and secure more victories and trophies for my country.”
This record was particularly special as it coincided with Deepti's 150th T20I match, making her only the third Indian woman to reach this milestone, following in the footsteps of Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana.
Deepti's exceptional bowling was instrumental in India's impressive 94-run victory to kick off their Asia Cup campaign. India set a target of 159/9 after batting first, with Shafali Verma leading the score with 64 runs.
Thailand struggled in their innings, being bowled out for just 65 runs in 16.1 overs, with Deepti and Nandani Sharma each claiming three wickets. Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the standout performer for Thailand, scoring 41 runs.
For Deepti, this match not only marked a significant personal achievement but also a strong start for India as they defend their title, adding yet another highlight to her illustrious international career.
