Deepti Sharma Poised to Break Wicket-Taking Record in T20 World Cup 2026
Deepti Sharma on the Verge of Making History
Manchester [UK], June 24 (News Media): Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma is set to make history as she gears up to face Bangladesh in India's fourth Group A match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday.
The 28-year-old off-spinner is currently tied with the legendary Jhulan Goswami, both having taken 355 wickets in women's international cricket. A single wicket against Bangladesh will elevate Deepti to the top of the all-time list, solidifying her reputation as one of the sport's elite all-rounders.
Deepti has had a remarkable World Cup thus far, starting with a five-wicket haul against arch-rivals Pakistan, which was pivotal in India's triumph. She then recorded figures of 1/26 in three overs against the Netherlands in Leeds, matching Jhulan's long-standing record.
Although she did not take any wickets in India's last match against South Africa, where the Proteas won by six wickets, Deepti remains a key asset for India and is expected to play a vital role against Bangladesh as the team aims to enhance its semi-final prospects.
Among Indian bowlers, Deepti is the highest wicket-taker in T20 Internationals, boasting 167 wickets from 147 matches. In One-Day Internationals, she has claimed 166 wickets, ranking second to Jhulan Goswami's 255 ODI wickets for India.
In Test cricket, Deepti has taken 22 wickets in just six matches, while Jhulan concluded her illustrious career with 44 Test wickets, 255 ODI wickets, and 56 T20I wickets before retiring in 2022.
Following Deepti and Jhulan on the all-time women's international wicket-taking list are England's Katherine Sciver-Brunt (335), Australia's Ellyse Perry (332), England's Sophie Ecclestone (327), and South Africa's Shabnim Ismail (318).
With a historic achievement within reach, all eyes will be on Deepti as India faces Bangladesh in this crucial World Cup clash on Thursday.
