India's Boxing Performance at the World Cup
New Delhi, June 15: On the inaugural day of the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) held in China, Deepak and Poonam stood out as the only Indian boxers to secure victories, advancing to the next rounds in their respective weight classes. Unfortunately, seven other Indian competitors faced defeats.
Poonam, competing in the women's 54kg category, achieved a remarkable 5-0 win against Uzbekistan's Aziza Yokubova in the preliminary round of 32, allowing her to progress further in the tournament.
Deepak followed suit in the men's 70kg division, where he also won decisively, defeating Turkmenistan's Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov with a unanimous score of 5-0 in the same preliminary round.
However, the remaining Indian boxers were unable to advance. Sawan Gill also exited the competition after losing to Norway's Omar Shiha in the men's 90kg category.
