Badrinath Questions Dhoni's Place in CSK

Subramaniam Badrinath, a former Indian cricketer who had a notable stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under MS Dhoni, has sparked a significant discussion regarding Dhoni's future in the team. At 44, Badrinath raised concerns about Dhoni's effectiveness as both a batsman and wicket-keeper, suggesting that while it might be entertaining to see him hit sixes late in the innings, the real question is whether he can endure an entire season or if he should be utilized as an Impact player.

In recent seasons, Dhoni has struggled with a knee issue, often batting at No. 7 or even lower, typically in the 18th or 19th over. Although his wicket-keeping skills remain sharp, his ability to sustain a full season for CSK is uncertain. His performance metrics, including average and strike rate, have also declined.

Badrinath commented, "While it’s thrilling to watch MS Dhoni come in during the final overs, we must ask if he can participate in every match. Should he be considered as an Impact player? This is crucial for CSK, especially with a roster full of batters and wicketkeepers. Additionally, will Dhoni be able to mentor Ruturaj Gaikwad effectively? Is Gaikwad receptive to Dhoni's guidance?"

Having shared the field with Dhoni, Badrinath recognizes that Dhoni is not very vocal. With Sanju Samson also in the squad, who has experience captaining the Rajasthan Royals, it seems CSK may be strategizing for a transition. Although Dhoni's selection is likely, Badrinath questions whether he still adds significant value to the team.

"Dhoni is a man of few words, and we must consider Sanju Samson's presence as a senior player. Reflecting on last season, it’s worth discussing if MS Dhoni still holds substantial value. However, if Dhoni is available for CSK, he should definitely be on the field," he concluded.

Chennai Super Kings are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on April 30, 2026, at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, followed by their first home match at MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 3, 2026. Their subsequent matches will be against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals.
