Both France and Norway have already advanced to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup after winning their first two matches in Group I. The upcoming encounter will determine which team secures the top position in the group. Norway will rely on the in-form Haaland, who has netted four goals, while France will look to Kylian Mbappe, who has also scored four times.
In preparation for the match, Upamecano emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance when defending against Haaland. He noted that it is essential to keep track of the striker's movements while also focusing on the ball. He praised Haaland's clever positioning and explosive speed, drawing a parallel to Mbappe's quickness.
“When facing Haaland, you must always monitor his position while also keeping an eye on the ball carrier. Even if the numbers are even, I find myself checking over my shoulder multiple times to track his movements, especially when he’s on my blind side,” Upamecano explained in an interview with a sports publication.
He further elaborated that Haaland's ability to change direction swiftly makes it vital to anticipate his actions and limit his space. If it proves difficult to prevent Haaland from receiving the ball, the focus should shift to guiding him wide, thereby narrowing his shooting angle and effectively managing the physical contest.
“He requires just a moment to alter his direction, so it’s crucial to keep tabs on him. If you can’t predict his first touch and stop him from getting the ball, you should aim to push him towards the sidelines. He thrives in physical confrontations, as do I, but sometimes it’s necessary to control the situation by directing him to the flank and limiting his shooting opportunities,” he added.
