Daren Sammy Faces Penalty for Comments

New Delhi [India] June 29: Daren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies cricket team, has been penalized 15% of his match fee due to a Level 1 violation of the ICC Code of Conduct. This incident occurred during the second day of the first Test, which the West Indies won by 159 runs, thanks to Josh Hazlewood's impressive bowling performance of 5-43 in Bridgetown.

The fine stems from remarks made by Sammy during a media session at the conclusion of Day 2, where he expressed criticism towards one of the match officials regarding several incidents that took place during the day's play.

At 41 years old, Sammy was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the Code, which addresses 'public criticism of or inappropriate comments concerning incidents in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match Official, or team involved in any International Match.'

Consequently, Sammy has also received one demerit point on his disciplinary record, marking his first offense within a 24-month timeframe.

Sammy acknowledged the violation and accepted the penalty suggested by ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Javagal Srinath, following the charge brought forth by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, along with third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.

Level 1 offenses typically incur a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can result in fines up to 50% of the match fee, in addition to one or two demerit points.

The Australian team triumphed over the West Indies by 159 runs after the home side lost all ten wickets in the final session of Day 3 while attempting to chase a target of 301 runs in a match filled with dramatic moments.

The second Test is scheduled to commence on Thursday, July 3, at the National Cricket Stadium in St George's.
