Daren Sammy Commends West Indies Amid India's Dominance in T20 Series
Sammy's Praise for West Indies Performance
In New Delhi, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has reiterated his admiration for his team's efforts against India earlier this month. He emphasized that India's explosive batting display in New Zealand highlights the significant challenge the Windies faced during their recent T20I series.
Following India's impressive chase of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs to secure a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20I at Hnry Stadium in Wellington, Sammy expressed his thoughts on social media.
He remarked, "Wow... That’s why I commended my team for their achievements in India. India is a formidable opponent. #justwow 1. Smaller boundaries 2. Batting paradise pitches 3. Wet ball for bowlers."
Sammy also pointed out the ongoing difficulties bowlers encounter in the T20 format, noting that India's aggressive strategy remained consistent despite varying conditions and venues.
He stated, "Different continent, same approach. With larger boundaries and slightly less batter-friendly pitches, nothing has changed. Bowlers are still under pressure. Execute or be executed..."
India's recent success against New Zealand follows a closely contested five-match T20I series against the West Indies, which ended in a 2-2 draw, with the final match in Bengaluru being abandoned due to rain. The series showcased strong performances from both teams, with West Indies captain Shai Hope earning the Player of the Series title after scoring 261 runs.
India initially won the first match in Lucknow, but the West Indies leveled the series with a six-wicket win in Ranchi. The hosts regained the lead with a narrow 14-run victory in Indore, only for the visitors to respond with a 24-run win in Hyderabad, setting the stage for a decisive match that ultimately could not take place.
Sammy's remarks following India's latest performance reflect his belief that his team held their own against a powerful batting lineup, despite the pressures modern T20 cricket places on bowlers.
In the third T20I against New Zealand, India showcased their aggressive style once again. Chasing a target of 199, they were propelled by a stunning opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who combined for 133 runs in just 7.1 overs.
Abhishek delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 113 runs off 38 balls, including 11 sixes and nine fours. He reached his century in a mere 35 deliveries, marking his fourth hundred in men's T20Is and the 11th overall in men's T20 cricket.
Sooryavanshi supported the left-hander with a quick 45 runs off 19 balls, hitting four sixes and four fours. Their partnership allowed India to take control of the chase, finishing with 40 balls to spare.
Earlier, the Indian bowlers had successfully restricted New Zealand to 198 runs, setting up a chase that highlighted the depth and aggressive intent of India's batting lineup.
Sammy's comments regarding boundary sizes, batter-friendly pitches, and wet conditions underscore the challenges bowlers face in high-scoring encounters. Smaller boundaries can facilitate big hits, while wet conditions can hinder bowlers' grip on the ball.
Despite these challenges, Sammy acknowledged India's ability to sustain their attacking style across various playing conditions. The visitors have won all three matches in New Zealand thus far, continuing their strong record against the Black Caps.
India has triumphed in 21 of their 33 T20I encounters with New Zealand, including nine out of 14 matches played in New Zealand. This latest victory also secured the series with two matches still to play.
The fourth T20I is set to take place at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, where New Zealand will aim to stop India's winning streak. The hosts will need to devise a strategy to contain the Indian top order, particularly Abhishek, whose power-hitting has consistently posed challenges for opposing bowlers.
For Sammy, India's performances have reinforced the significance of the West Indies' showing earlier this month, where they managed to compete effectively across four completed matches before rain disrupted a potential series-deciding contest.
