Rohit Sharma Poised for a Breakout IPL Season

South African cricket icon Dale Steyn has expressed confidence in Mumbai Indians (MI) star Rohit Sharma to excel in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Steyn believes this season could be Rohit's best yet, predicting he will approach the game with intensity and focus. Although Rohit is celebrated as an IPL great, he has only surpassed the 500-run milestone in a season once, achieving 538 runs in 2013 while playing for Mumbai Indians.

After stepping back from Test cricket, many doubted Rohit's capabilities, but he made a strong comeback in ODIs, showcasing perhaps his finest form. Steyn remarked, “I expect him to be aggressive yet controlled, avoiding reckless shots while adapting to the conditions. We are likely to witness the best version of Rohit Sharma this season,” he stated during a broadcast on Friday.

Steyn further noted the palpable excitement surrounding Indian cricket, emphasizing a growing winning culture that is gaining global recognition. He pointed out that Rohit, who no longer participates in all three formats consistently, will leverage the IPL to reaffirm his status among the elite players. “This is his moment—two months to demonstrate to India that he remains at the pinnacle, alongside Virat and other experienced players. Opening at Wankhede with Quinton de Kock and potentially (Ryan) Rickleton, Rohit is ready to make a significant impact. It promises to be thrilling,” Steyn concluded.

MI is set to kick off their IPL journey on Sunday, March 29, facing off against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the renowned Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
