Dale Steyn Praises SA20's Impact and India's Rising Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Dale Steyn Discusses SA20's Growth and Future
Johannesburg [South Africa], June 18: Former South African cricketer Dale Steyn shared his thoughts on the evolution of the SA20 league, claiming it now ranks as the second-best cricket league globally. He emphasized that the league has successfully re-engaged fans who were eager for high-quality cricket.
During a recent discussion organized by SA20 ahead of its fifth season, set to commence in January next year, Steyn highlighted the enthusiastic crowds as a key factor that sets SA20 apart from other T20 leagues. He noted that the league has played a crucial role in revitalizing cricket in South Africa post-pandemic.
“The nation was yearning for cricket, and SA20 has fulfilled that need, with fans embracing it wholeheartedly. They have been craving quality matches. The turnout has been impressive, with each city striving to outshine the others. Gqeberha, a smaller city, has particularly excelled, surpassing larger cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban,” he remarked.
Steyn pointed out that players thrive in packed stadiums, which has led to outstanding performances, particularly from the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who have benefitted from their passionate supporters.
The fifth season of SA20 is scheduled to kick off on January 9, 2027, and will continue until February 14.
Steyn also reflected on the legacy of South African cricket, noting its consistent production of exceptional white-ball players. He expressed that the team is always expected to perform well in ICC tournaments, despite not having won a 50-over or T20 World Cup yet.
“South Africa has a rich history of producing top white-ball cricketers. This culture needs to be maintained. Although we haven't clinched a World Cup title, we consistently enter these competitions with high hopes of reaching the finals or winning,” he stated.
Additionally, Steyn praised India's 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, predicting that he could surpass legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli by the end of his career.
“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is exceptional. He outshines many current international players. He’s a remarkable talent that Indian cricket should cherish. When you think of icons like Sachin and Virat, this young man is poised to achieve even greater heights. It’s crucial to nurture his talent responsibly,” he concluded.
Sooryavanshi had an outstanding IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals, earning the Orange Cap as the season's top scorer, with 776 runs in 16 innings at an impressive average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.50, including a century and five fifties. His remarkable performance has earned him a spot in the Indian squads for the T20Is against Ireland and England, making him the youngest player to receive an Indian call-up.
