Dale Steyn Critiques India's Bowling Strategy in Second Test Against South Africa

Steyn's Insights on India's Bowling Tactics

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 23: Dale Steyn, the former South African fast bowler, expressed his views on India's performance during Day 2 of the second Test against South Africa at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. After ending Day 1 with South Africa at 247-6, India struggled on Day 2, allowing the visitors to amass 489 runs, largely due to the efforts of Senuran Muthusamy and Marco Jansen.

During his appearance on the JioStar show 'Cricket Live', Steyn criticized the Indian team's adherence to their initial bowling strategy for too long. He noted that their overly defensive approach permitted the South African batters to score easy singles, and he pointed out that the straight bowling tactic that worked in Kolkata was ineffective on the flatter Guwahati pitch.

Steyn recommended that India adopt a more aggressive stance with their field placements and strategies. He remarked, “While they bowled well initially, they failed to adapt their plan. They relied on Plan A for too long without switching to alternatives. Their defensive setup allowed batters to settle in comfortably.”

He further elaborated, “They should have aimed to be more aggressive early on, compelling batters to target one side of the field. Their straight bowling opened up both sides, which was not ideal for this pitch.”

Muthusamy achieved his first Test century with a score of 109, while Jansen played a remarkable innings, scoring 93 runs off just 91 balls, including six fours and seven sixes.

Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble commended Jansen for his significant contribution from the lower order, highlighting his proficiency against spinners and short deliveries. Jansen's partnership with Muthusamy was crucial in propelling South Africa's total towards 500.

Kumble stated, “It’s challenging when the lower order performs like that. Marco Jansen took control of the game during that session, especially with his aggressive hitting. He clearly has confidence in his batting and was exceptional against spinners. Although he became a bit complacent towards the end, it was a fantastic innings, and his collaboration with Muthusamy ensured South Africa surpassed 400 and approached 500.”
