CSK's Opening Strategy for IPL 2026: Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson Set to Lead
CSK's Opening Pair for IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has hinted at a significant change in the team's opening lineup for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. He indicated that he and Sanju Samson will be the opening batsmen. Last season was disappointing for CSK, with the opening pair's struggles being a key factor in their poor performance. Despite experimenting with various combinations, none proved successful. The introduction of Ayush Mhatre at the top did yield some quick starts, but with the acquisition of Sanju Samson, the franchise appears to be opting for a more seasoned duo.
During a recent captain's meeting in Mumbai, Gaikwad's comments about the opening combination strongly suggested that he and Samson would take the field together.

Advantages of Sanju Samson Opening
Sanju Samson has experience batting in various positions, but his most impressive performances have come when he opens the innings. After being promoted to the opening slot for Team India, he scored three centuries. His recent form during the T20 World Cup showcased his ability to perform at the top, significantly contributing to India's title defense. Given his talent, it makes strategic sense for CSK to utilize him as an opener.
Samson complements Gaikwad's style well; he is aggressive and tends to take the initiative against bowlers, while Gaikwad provides stability. This combination allows CSK to have a solid anchor in Gaikwad, enabling more aggressive players like Samson, Ayush Mhatre, and Sarfaraz Khan to play freely. Gaikwad's statistics as an opener are impressive as well; he averages 44.02 in that position, compared to 26 at No. 3, with 2289 runs scored at a strike rate of 136.90 over 60 innings.
