CSK Faces Criticism for Poor Bowling Tactics
After suffering their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2026, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are facing intense scrutiny over their ineffective bowling strategies. In a match held at Chinnaswamy Stadium, CSK fell short against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 43 runs, leaving them at the bottom of the points table. The team's death bowling has emerged as a significant concern, particularly after Tim David and RCB captain Rajat Patidar scored a combined 78 runs during the final overs.
Ambati Rayudu expressed his frustration with the team's adherence to ineffective tactics, while former Australian captain Aaron Finch highlighted issues with both execution and preparation. Rayudu stated, "More than a bad plan, they just stuck to that bad plan. There was nobody to intervene, take those 20–30 seconds, slow things down and guide the bowler. They should have just reset a little," as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
Jamie Overton, who was criticized for his bowling approach on a favorable batting surface, conceded 30 runs in one over during the death overs. Rayudu referenced MS Dhoni's previous disapproval of similar strategies, noting, "They’ve tried that in practice over the years, but it never translated into matches because MS didn’t approve of that angle in the death overs. Even as batters, we found it easy to counter — just step half a foot outside the crease and the angle is nullified." He emphasized the need for CSK to reconsider their strategies, suggesting that conventional methods like effective yorkers and well-executed slower balls might be more beneficial.
CSK's struggles in the closing overs have significantly contributed to their poor start this season, as they currently hold the lowest economy rate at 16.5, which is nearly five runs higher than their previous season's record, already the worst in IPL history. In a notable contrast, the Rajasthan Royals successfully chased down 128 runs in just 12.1 overs in their opening match, indicating that CSK's death bowling has yet to be adequately tested. The Punjab Kings also capitalized on CSK's weaknesses, scoring 33 runs in just 2.4 overs during their match at Chepauk.
Looking ahead, Ruturaj Gaikwad's team will aim to bounce back when they face the Delhi Capitals at home on April 11.
