Gaikwad Analyzes CSK's Performance Against SRH

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], April 18: Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), acknowledged that his team lost crucial momentum during the middle overs, resulting in a 10-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a thrilling Southern Derby match at IPL 2026 on Saturday night.

In his post-match comments, Gaikwad noted that CSK had initially evaluated the game well, especially considering SRH's powerplay performance, and anticipated a higher target.

He pointed out a significant slowdown after the first 10 overs, where CSK managed to score only four runs in two overs, allowing SRH to gain control. This phase was pivotal, as the required run rate increased significantly in the final overs, making it challenging for CSK to chase down the target.

“Given their powerplay, I expected a score around 220-230. To restrict them to under 200 was a win in itself. We needed about 80 runs in the last 10 overs, and it was crucial to build partnerships. However, we only managed 4 runs in the two overs after the 10-over mark. Chasing 12-13 runs in the final overs is tough,” Gaikwad stated during the post-match presentation.

Despite the loss, he commended his bowling unit for their consistent performances in recent matches, emphasizing their disciplined approach.

“Our bowling unit has been performing well for three consecutive games. I thought Abhishek played exceptionally today, and everyone contributed effectively,” he remarked.

Gaikwad also highlighted young bowler Anshul Kamboj for his execution, particularly in the death overs.

“Anshul is putting in a lot of effort into his bowling, especially in the death overs. It’s rare to find bowlers who have such clarity and communicate their plans to the captain,” he added.

In the match, SRH narrowly defeated CSK by 10 runs in a high-scoring contest.

SRH batted first, scoring 194/9, with standout performances from Abhishek Sharma (59 off 22 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (59 off 39 balls). Abhishek set a record with a rapid fifty, while Klaasen steadied the innings after early wickets fell. CSK bowlers Jamie Overton (3/37), Anshul Kamboj (3/22), and Mukesh Choudhary (2/21) managed to keep SRH under 200 despite a strong start.

In response, CSK had promising contributions from Ayush Mhatre (30 off 13), Matthew Short (34 off 30), and Sarfaraz Khan (25 off 16). However, SRH's bowlers, led by Eshan Malinga (3/29) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (2/31), tightened their grip during the middle and death overs. Key breakthroughs disrupted CSK's rhythm, leaving them short despite a late surge.

Ultimately, CSK fell 10 runs short of the target of 195, unable to accelerate in the final overs, with SRH's disciplined bowling proving to be the deciding factor.

With this victory, SRH moved up to fourth place with three wins out of six matches, while CSK dropped to seventh with two wins from six games.
