Croatia's Coach Critiques Team Performance Despite Victory Over Panama
Croatia Secures Narrow Win Against Panama
Toronto [Canada], June 24: After Croatia's narrow 1-0 victory against Panama in their FIFA World Cup match, head coach Zlatko Dalic expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance, particularly in the first half. He admitted he did not anticipate the match to be as challenging as it turned out to be.
Thanks to Ante Budimir's efforts, Croatia managed to clinch a vital win in their Group L encounter at Toronto Stadium on Tuesday (local time), keeping their World Cup hopes alive following a disappointing 4-2 loss to England in their opening match.
In his post-match comments, Dalic remarked, "They were under significant pressure, and the opponent controlled the ball too often, which disrupted our game plan."
He added, "We struggled to adapt initially, which is why I felt frustrated and reacted the way I did."
Having lost to England, Croatia understood the importance of this match, knowing that another defeat could jeopardize their chances of advancing to the knockout stage. The 2018 World Cup finalists and third-place finishers in 2022 started slowly against a formidable Panama team but gradually found their rhythm in the second half.
Dalic stated, "I honestly did not expect such a tough match. Our response was not ideal, possibly due to the pressure of needing these three points to progress to the next round."
Looking ahead, Dalic emphasized the need for improvement across all areas, especially defense, as they prepare for their upcoming match against Ghana in Philadelphia. A win in this final group stage match could secure their place in the round of 32.
"I am not entirely satisfied with our performance, particularly in the first half," Dalic concluded. "However, I will put this behind us and focus on what lies ahead."
