Cristiano Ronaldo Remains Key to Portugal's World Cup Aspirations Despite Injury
Ronaldo's Role in Portugal's World Cup Journey
Atlanta [US], March 31: Robert Martinez, the head coach of Portugal, emphasized the significance of Cristiano Ronaldo in the national team's strategy as they prepare for the FIFA World Cup, despite the player's recent injury.
Ronaldo was unable to join the national squad for friendly matches against Mexico and the USA due to an injury sustained during a Saudi Pro League game with Al Nassr in February.
In their first friendly, Portugal ended in a goalless draw against Mexico, and they are set to face the USA next at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Martinez praised Ronaldo, calling him a "role model" who is "eager to improve every day and serves as an inspiration for younger teammates."
According to Martinez, "Cristiano is our captain, a role model, and a player with immense drive," referring to the 41-year-old as he aims for World Cup success in his sixth tournament appearance.
He added, "He is not merely a 41-year-old player; he is someone who strives to enhance his game daily. He exemplifies leadership and inspires younger players, embodying our team's values."
On the field, Ronaldo has netted 25 goals in his last 30 matches. Martinez noted that player evaluations occur regularly, maintaining high standards within the national team.
Currently, Ronaldo is training separately in Saudi Arabia but is expected to return to action next week, with Martinez describing the injury as "not serious."
Martinez stated, "He has a minor injury and should be back to training and playing next week. Cristiano is our captain and plays a crucial role in our attacking strategy, particularly in the box."
As Portugal's all-time leading scorer, Ronaldo has amassed 143 goals in 226 appearances since his debut in 2003.
Martinez also mentioned that Ronaldo has not discussed retirement plans with the team, adding, "I have learned not to predict the future with Cristiano. His focus is on performing at his best right now, without making future plans."
