Ronaldo Sets New Record for Portugal in World Cup History

In a remarkable achievement, Cristiano Ronaldo has become the highest scorer for Portugal in FIFA World Cup history. During a match against Uzbekistan, he netted two goals in the first half, bringing his total World Cup goals to 10 and surpassing the legendary Eusebio.

Eusebio, celebrated as one of football's all-time greats, led Portugal to a third-place finish in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, where he was the tournament's top scorer with nine goals. His accolades include winning the Ballon d'Or in 1965 and helping S.L. Benfica secure the European Cup in 1962, along with multiple league titles and cups.

With his latest performance, Ronaldo has moved ahead of Eusebio, who previously held the record. Pauleta follows in third place on Portugal's World Cup scoring list with four goals.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finishing a well-coordinated move initiated by Joao Cancelo's impressive run and cross. This goal tied him with Eusebio at nine World Cup goals. Portugal extended their lead in the 17th minute with a goal from Nuno Mendes, and Ronaldo struck again in the 39th minute, receiving a perfectly timed pass from Bruno Fernandes and slotting it past Uzbekistan's goalkeeper Utkir Nematov.

This brace not only elevated Ronaldo's tally to 10 goals but also made him the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups, having previously scored in the tournaments from 2006 to 2022.

Despite a challenging start in the tournament with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, where he struggled to make an impact, Ronaldo's performance against Uzbekistan showcased his enduring talent. In the earlier match, he recorded only 25 touches and failed to hit the target with three attempts, marking one of his least involved games in World Cup history.

This recent scoring feat comes after a worrying stretch where Ronaldo went 10 matches without a goal in major competitions, raising concerns about his form despite his illustrious career.
