Ronaldo's Departure Sparks Controversy

Lisbon [Portugal], October 7: Portugal's head coach Jorge Jesus has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo's remarks regarding "broken promises," stating he will review the comments after initially lacking time to do so.

Ronaldo recently spoke out about his abrupt exit from the national team camp, which has stirred significant debate in the football community. He emphasized his continued availability for the national squad while expressing his disagreements with coach Jorge Jesus. The Al Nassr forward left the camp early following a communication breakdown concerning his role during the UEFA Nations League.

The 41-year-old football icon was part of Al Nassr's successful team when Jesus managed the Saudi club. Tensions escalated during Portugal's match against Norway, where Ronaldo was told to warm up with the expectation of playing in the second half. However, Jorge ultimately chose not to field him, leaving Ronaldo visibly frustrated on the sidelines.

While Jorge cited tactical reasons for benching Ronaldo, this only intensified the rift between the two. In a lengthy public statement, Ronaldo accused Jorge of failing to uphold his commitments.

On Tuesday, Jorge mentioned, as reported by a sports outlet, "I was at the Portugal Under-21s match and didn’t have time to read it. Now I will take the time to go through the statement."

In a detailed Instagram post, Ronaldo expressed, "If I am fit and performing well for my club, I hope to be available for the national team after serving any suspension that may be imposed."

He elaborated on his decision to leave the squad, stating his dissatisfaction with being benched despite warming up during the match.

"Everyone knows what happened next. I warmed up from halftime and watched the minutes pass without being called on," Ronaldo explained. "The manager had broken his promise to me."

Following the incident, Ronaldo and Jesus met, along with Saudi Pro League sporting director Simao Coutinho. Ronaldo claimed they agreed that Jesus would publicly clarify the situation, with an eight-point plan outlining the discussion.

Ronaldo clarified that he did not demand an apology from Jesus but felt the coach's subsequent remarks did not align with their private discussions.

"This was the second time he broke his word to me," Ronaldo stated. "I chose to leave the training camp rather than wait for more unfulfilled promises."

Jesus, however, denied that any such agreement was made, while still leaving the possibility open for Ronaldo's return to the national team.

Ronaldo also expressed regret to his teammates and the Portuguese public for his departure and stated he would accept any penalties from the Portuguese Football Federation.

As the captain and record holder for appearances and goals for Portugal, Ronaldo addressed rumors about his international career potentially concluding with a farewell match.

"I have heard much talk about farewell matches and the Federation wanting to provide me with that opportunity. I learned that nothing is given freely in life," he remarked.

"I assure my fans, especially the Portuguese, that we will have farewell matches; there will be time for that. But when I think of the national team, my focus is on competing."

Ronaldo's recent statements have quelled immediate speculation regarding his future with the Portuguese national team, reaffirming his commitment to competing rather than merely seeking a farewell.
