Excitement Builds for Women's T20 World Cup
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is set to kick off at Edgbaston on June 12, with England facing Sri Lanka in the opening match. To celebrate the 100-day countdown, the iconic scoreboard at the Birmingham venue has been transformed into a vibrant countdown display.
This initiative has inspired similar scoreboard transformations across various locations, both in the UK and globally, marking the approach of one of the year's most anticipated sporting events, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC).
England Women’s captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt, along with teammates Sophia Dunkley and Lauren Filer, participated in the countdown event in Birmingham, where fans can look forward to exceptional sporting action and a grand celebration of women’s cricket.
Simultaneously, countdown scoreboards were unveiled at cricket venues across the UK, including Old Trafford in Manchester, Headingley in Leeds, Hampshire Bowl in Southampton, Bristol County Ground, The Oval, and Lord’s in London.
Globally, cricket grounds such as Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia, Eden Gardens in India, Merrion Cricket Club in Ireland, The Hague Cricket Club in the Netherlands, Basin Reserve in New Zealand, Gaddafi Stadium in Pakistan, Wanderers Cricket Stadium in South Africa, R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, and Kensington Oval in Barbados also joined in on the celebration with their own digital countdown displays.
Beth Barrett-Wild, the Tournament Director for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “In just 100 days, England and Wales will welcome the world’s top female cricketers for an unforgettable sporting event. With over 115,000 tickets already sold, the excitement is palpable as we prepare for a tournament that aims to elevate women’s cricket into the mainstream.”
The tournament will commence on June 12, running until July 5, featuring 12 teams competing for the championship, marking the largest field in the tournament's history.
Group B includes Ireland, Scotland, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies, while Group A consists of Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands.
