Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 30: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to announce the schedule for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 in Cape Town this Thursday.
This event will kick off the one-year countdown to the tournament, which is slated to begin on October 2, 2027, with the final match scheduled for Sunday, November 21, 2027. Additionally, the ticket ballot for fans will also open, as indicated in a press release.
By the qualification cut-off on September 30, ten out of the fourteen teams will have secured their places in the tournament. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe will automatically qualify, while eight teams will earn their spots based on the ICC ODI rankings.
India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are confirmed to join the two host nations. The remaining four teams will be determined through the Qualifiers, which are set to take place early next year. Notably, two-time champions West Indies will also need to navigate the qualification process to participate in this prestigious event.
Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are aiming for what could be their final ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, with aspirations of concluding their journeys in this tournament with a trophy.
In a recent conversation with JioStar at the beginning of India’s new home season, Rohit Sharma, who led India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024, expressed his eagerness to experience the joy of lifting the trophy once more. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, who celebrated winning the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 15 years ago, is determined to give his all to secure another title for India.
“Winning the upcoming ODI World Cup would be incredible. I’m not focused on the full circle aspect right now. Winning a World Cup for India is a unique experience. I’ve felt that joy twice in the T20 format. In 2007, I was just a young 20-year-old. Winning a World Cup in my first year was amazing. After winning the Champions Trophy in 2013, there was a long gap of nearly 11 years without an ICC title. Therefore, when we won the T20 World Cup in 2024, it highlighted how significant it was,” Rohit Sharma shared.
“That feeling still resonates with me. I know what it’s like to win a World Cup, and I want to experience that again. The joy we had is indescribable, and that’s why winning this World Cup is crucial for me,” he added.
Virat Kohli also spoke to JioStar, stating that his aim is to contribute as much as possible to the team’s success.
“I’m not in a mindset where I feel pressured to achieve something I didn’t accomplish earlier. However, this will be my last World Cup for India, and that drives my motivation. I want to give everything I have. The goal is undoubtedly to win the World Cup, and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes. My dream is to play a match-winning innings in the finals while chasing a score; that would be ideal. If that doesn’t happen but we win the World Cup, I’ll still be thrilled because, ultimately, it’s about winning the trophy,” Virat Kohli concluded.
