Cooper Connolly Shines in Australia's Thrilling ODI Victory Over Bangladesh
Australia Clinches ODI Series Finale Against Bangladesh
Dhaka [Bangladesh], June 15: In a thrilling conclusion to the ODI series, Australian batsman Cooper Connolly and Bangladeshi pacer Shoriful Islam delivered standout performances during Australia's narrow one-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Sunday.
Connolly's remarkable century was pivotal in chasing down a target of 275 runs, securing a win for Australia, who faced a determined Bangladesh side that had already celebrated their first-ever ODI series triumph against the six-time world champions.
At just 22 years and 296 days, Connolly became the third youngest Australian to score a century in ODIs, following legends Ricky Ponting and Steve Smith. He achieved an impressive 149 runs off 136 balls, featuring 13 fours and six sixes, boasting a strike rate of 111.19. This century marks his first in international cricket, coming after his initial professional century with Punjab Kings in the IPL earlier this season.
In his 12 ODIs and nine innings, Connolly has accumulated 281 runs, averaging 40.14 with a strike rate of 86.46, including one century and one half-century.
On the bowling front, Shoriful Islam made headlines with his exceptional figures of 6/48, marking the fifth-best bowling performance by a Bangladeshi bowler, trailing only Mashrafe Mortaza's record of 6/26 against Kenya in 2006.
In the match, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. After a shaky start at 61/3 in 14.1 overs, they recovered thanks to fifties from Towhid Hridoy (83 runs off 88 balls), Mosaddek Hossain (56* off 51 balls), and Litton Das (58* off 78 balls), finishing at 274/5 in their allotted overs.
For Australia, Matt Renshaw (2/44) and Xavier Bartlett (2/47) were the leading wicket-takers.
During the chase, Australia found themselves at 70/3 but a crucial 64-run partnership between Connolly and Marnus Labuschagne (29 runs off 45 balls) revitalized their innings. Connolly's partnership with Cameron Green (27 runs off 35 balls) pushed Australia past the 200-run mark. Despite a late collapse to 271/9, Adam Zampa (4*) and Riley Meredith (2*) managed to steer Australia to victory with three balls remaining.
