Ritu Negi's Unexpected Exclusion from Cash Awards

In a surprising development, Ritu Negi, an Asian Games gold medalist and recipient of the Arjuna Award, has been removed from the list of kabaddi players from Himachal Pradesh eligible for the state government's increased cash prize, leaving her and her family in disbelief.

Just a week prior, Negi was among four players, including team captain Pushpa Rana, Jyoti Thakur, and Bhavna Thakur, who were recognized. Her name was even featured in a congratulatory message posted by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on social media.

However, a recent government announcement regarding a hike in the cash award for kabaddi players from Rs 33 lakh to Rs 1 crore did not include her name.

Sports Minister Yadvinder Goma expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the reason for her exclusion, stating, “I will review the file and consult with the Chief Minister,” when questioned about Negi's omission.

Negi, originally from Sirmaur and now married in Haryana, expressed her shock and disappointment over the abrupt decision.

“I was celebrated as Himachal’s daughter just a week ago. The Chief Minister congratulated me on Facebook, and I received calls from Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and Anurag Thakur. I am perplexed by what transpired two days ago,” she remarked.

She described the exclusion as disrespectful, highlighting her achievements, including being the only Indian woman kabaddi player to compete in three consecutive Asian Games, where she secured two gold medals and one silver.

Her father, Bhawan Singh Negi, raised concerns about whether her marital status influenced the decision. “Does marriage alter the fact that she is still a daughter of Himachal?” he questioned.

He noted that Negi had previously received the state cash award for her gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games, despite being married at that time.

While Negi acknowledged that she would receive recognition from the Haryana government under its sports policy, she pointed out that athletes often receive awards from multiple states. She emphasized that she is employed with Railways and has represented Himachal Pradesh numerous times in domestic competitions.

“Why is Himachal distancing itself from me at this stage of my career?” she asked, suspecting foul play and indicating her intention to meet with the Chief Minister soon.
