Controversial Dismissal Overshadows IPL 2026 Opener Between SRH and RCB
IPL 2026 Opening Match Sparks Debate
The inaugural match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) was marred by controversy as Heinrich Klaasen's dismissal became a hot topic among fans during the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) game at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday (March 28). Klaasen, who scored 31 runs off 22 balls, was looking to build on a solid partnership of 97 runs with Ishan Kishan before being dismissed by Romario Shepherd on the first delivery of the 14th over. The South African batsman attempted a pull shot that appeared destined for a six but was caught at the mid-wicket boundary by Phil Salt, who managed to secure the ball while diving just before the boundary line.
After reviewing multiple replays, the third umpire ruled the catch valid, much to Klaasen's dismay, as he expressed his frustration to the fourth umpire while heading back to the dressing room. The cricket community was split on the decision, with some claiming that Salt's leg touched the boundary rope, while others argued it was merely a shadow.

Your call. I believe the cushion clearly was displaced by Salt’s feet while completing the catch. Not out and six, bad call, don't know how you can fluff that up as a third umpire. Klaasen was not out.#IPL2026 https://t.co/yQDyLM6BY8 pic.twitter.com/7HzMiQqSvR

In terms of match performance, SRH set a target of 201 runs after winning the toss, with Rajat Patidar opting to bat first. Ishan Kishan shone brightly in his captaincy debut, scoring 80 runs off just 38 balls, even as wickets fell around him. Aniket Verma contributed significantly with a rapid 43 runs off 18 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes. Phil Salt had an eventful day in the field, taking three catches, including a spectacular one-handed catch that many are calling one of the best in IPL history.
