Ruturaj Gaikwad's Struggles in IPL 2026

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are facing a significant challenge with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's batting performance in IPL 2026. So far, he has accumulated only 63 runs across five matches, averaging a mere 12.60. As CSK gears up to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18, discussions about a possible reshuffle in the batting order are intensifying.

Gaikwad, who has been a cornerstone for CSK in recent seasons, seems to be struggling to meet the demands of modern T20 batting, particularly during the powerplay. This is in stark contrast to the aggressive opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma from SRH, who have set a high standard with their fearless batting since 2024.

Within the CSK setup, there is a growing sentiment that a tactical adjustment might yield better results. One suggestion is to elevate young Ayush Mhatre to the opening position. Mhatre has demonstrated an attacking style similar to that of his peer, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, leading to speculation that Gaikwad could shift to the number three spot.

Head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that such discussions are part of the team's ongoing evaluation but emphasized the management's confidence in Gaikwad. "We discuss everything," Fleming stated regarding potential batting changes. "You have to support your captain fully, and Ruturaj will find his form again. He’s too talented not to make an impact in this lineup," he added.

Statistics present a mixed picture regarding any positional changes. As an opener, Gaikwad has an impressive record, amassing 2352 runs in 65 innings at an average of 41.26. However, his average drops to 26 in the limited chances he has had at number three, where he has scored 208 runs. Interestingly, his strike rate improves significantly from 135.8 as an opener to 151.82 at number three, indicating potential benefits from a change in role.

CSK's inconsistent start to the season has added to the pressure, with the team suffering three consecutive losses before recovering with victories against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Gaikwad himself acknowledged that his form had been weighing on his mind prior to the recent turnaround. "It feels great to win after a long time. I was starting to feel the pressure while batting. Now, I’m feeling positive and focused on what the team needs. A big innings is just around the corner, and I’m confident I’ll deliver when it matters," he stated after the win over KKR.

Fleming shared this optimism, highlighting Gaikwad's dedication behind the scenes. "We’re putting in a lot of effort on various aspects: the team dynamics, captaincy, and individual performances. He’s doing well in training and maintaining a positive mindset. He just hasn’t had the results yet, but we know he’s a quality player," Fleming remarked.

He also emphasized the importance of collective contributions during challenging times. "If we can support him through this phase and he regains his form, that’s how an IPL season can unfold. It’s rare for one player to dominate throughout. If we have players fluctuating in form and supporting each other, that’s beneficial. He’s working hard and has strong support around him," Fleming concluded.
