Concerns Arise Over LSG Owner's On-Field Interactions During IPL 2026

Michael Vaughan Raises Alarm on LSG Owner's Conduct

Michael Vaughan, the former captain of England, has expressed significant worries regarding the increasing attention on Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He cautioned that frequent interactions between the owner and players during matches could negatively impact team dynamics in IPL 2026. This concern arose following LSG's loss to Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, where Goenka was spotted engaging animatedly with captain Rishabh Pant on the field. The incident quickly gained traction online, reminiscent of the controversies surrounding KL Rahul in the 2024 season. Although the franchise attempted to manage the situation by sharing an “unfiltered” video of the exchange, it did little to alleviate doubts, with some fans questioning the video's authenticity.

Vaughan shared his thoughts, stating that such public displays, regardless of their intent, could lead to unnecessary scrutiny and disrupt the team's internal environment. He pointed out that even seemingly innocent conversations can be misinterpreted when conducted in public. “I find this franchise intriguing. Observing from a distance, I notice the owner interacting with Rishabh, Tom Moody, and Justin Langer on the pitch. I dislike seeing that, especially after just one game. These discussions can happen privately. Even if they are friendly, I don’t comprehend why they occur publicly, as it invites speculation about other discussions that might not have taken place. It could have just been a light-hearted chat, but it raises questions. The Lucknow franchise could face challenges quickly,” he remarked.

Vaughan also highlighted the necessity for clarity within the team's structure, particularly concerning Pant's position. The wicketkeeper-batter opened the innings against Delhi but only scored seven runs, prompting questions about the team's strategy. “Quotes can often be misinterpreted, but if there's any confusion within the group, clarity is essential. If the plan is for Rishabh to play that role alongside Mitch, it should be supported for several games,” he added.

After the match, Pant acknowledged that his role is still developing, suggesting that the team management has yet to finalize a consistent strategy. As the season unfolds, how LSG navigates both on-field decisions and off-field narratives will be pivotal in determining their success.
