Pujara's Insights on Test Cricket's Decline

Cheteshwar Pujara has shared his thoughts on the struggles faced by India in Test cricket, urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to implement strategies to revive the format. He highlighted the growing dominance of T20 cricket, where players are increasingly prioritizing the shorter format due to its lucrative financial incentives. While India has excelled in white-ball cricket, clinching victories in the last three ICC tournaments, the Test team has suffered significant setbacks, including two whitewashes in recent years against New Zealand and South Africa.

Pujara emphasized the importance of identifying a core group of 25-30 players dedicated to Test cricket. He suggested that the BCCI should focus on nurturing talent from domestic cricket, including those who may not have IPL contracts, by providing them with training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) during the IPL season. He believes that with proper guidance and training over a couple of years, these players can be prepared to excel in the Test format.

Pujara addressed concerns regarding the trend of players opting to specialize in white-ball formats, stating that while it is acceptable for some, he encourages young cricketers to embrace all three formats. He pointed out that many successful bowlers in the IPL, such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada, have also excelled in Test cricket, showcasing the importance of versatility.

He acknowledged that while some players may choose to focus solely on T20 cricket, he believes that aspiring cricketers should not shy away from red-ball cricket. Pujara concluded by noting that players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who may not have extensive red-ball experience but perform well in the IPL, illustrate the evolving landscape of cricket.
