Support for Veteran Players

In New Delhi, former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma expressed his support for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's chances of participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He emphasized that their on-field performances should take precedence over discussions about their age and future in the sport.

During the launch of the Schools Total T20 League (STTL) at the Constitution Club of India, Sharma, who serves as the League Commissioner, highlighted that both players' recent achievements validate their roles in the national team.

Sharma stated, "Age is merely a number. When players like Virat and Rohit are scoring centuries, as they did in the ODI series against West Indies, there's no need for overthinking. There will always be various opinions, but what truly matters is performing for the country and securing victories for India."

Kohli and Rohit's ODI Records

Kohli and Rohit are pivotal to India's ODI strategy as they gear up for the 2027 World Cup. Kohli, the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, has amassed 15,109 runs, including 55 centuries, while Rohit has contributed 12,120 runs with 35 hundreds.

Both players are set to participate in India's upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand starting November 4, followed by a three-match home series against Sri Lanka beginning December 13.

Backing Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Sharma also voiced his support for veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has returned to India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. The 36-year-old last played a T20I for India on November 22, 2022, against New Zealand in Napier.

He praised Bhuvneshwar's recent domestic and IPL performances, asserting that the bowler deserves this opportunity. "Bhuvneshwar has put in significant effort and is bowling exceptionally well. I witnessed his performance firsthand while commentating. He is well-suited for the conditions in New Zealand, and I wish him the best of luck. This is a chance he has been waiting for, so he must seize it," Sharma remarked.

Call for Balanced Pitches

The former pacer emphasized the need for better support for bowlers, advocating for balanced pitches that allow both batters and bowlers to compete fairly.

"There needs to be some improvement. While fans enjoy seeing runs scored, it's crucial to consider the bowlers as well. We need pitches that promote healthy competition. Just as the BCCI provides supportive wickets in domestic cricket, similar conditions should be available in international matches. It shouldn't be one-sided, where one team scores 400 and the other chases it down comfortably in six overs," Sharma explained.

Importance of Red-Ball Cricket

Regarding the rising popularity of T20 cricket at the grassroots level, Sharma acknowledged its growth but stressed the significance of red-ball cricket in developing young players.

"I am an advocate for red-ball cricket. While the current trends favor T20, it's essential for organizers and coaches to focus on traditional formats. I've encountered many coaches who prioritize red-ball cricket, which is commendable. However, young players should also seize the opportunities presented to them," he stated.

Advice for Young Cricketers

Sharma cautioned young cricketers against participating in tournaments that charge registration fees without contributing to their development. He urged organizers to create accessible platforms for aspiring players.

"School cricket is vital. We have the future stars among us. It's crucial to organize well-structured tournaments that genuinely benefit the kids. Avoid tournaments that exploit young players by charging fees without providing value. Play in environments where you don't have to spend money. If you perform well, you will attract attention from officials and associations, leading to further opportunities," he advised.

Launch of Schools Total T20 League

The Schools Total T20 League was officially launched, with over 90 schools expected to participate in its inaugural season. Organized by PNP Sports Management LLP, the league will feature separate tournaments for schools and colleges, with matches commencing on October 22.

Sharma, appointed as League Commissioner, announced that the winners would receive Rs 5 lakh, while the runners-up would be awarded Rs 2 lakh. The competition will initially take place in Delhi, with plans to expand across the National Capital Region, including Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, and to introduce other sports in future seasons.
