Chennai Super Kings Spin Attack Overwhelms Delhi Capitals in IPL Clash
CSK's Spin Dominance at Arun Jaitley Stadium
New Delhi [India] - On May 5, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) showcased their spin prowess, with Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmed leading the charge against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Despite some promising starts from the DC players, they struggled to capitalize, ultimately finishing with a score of 155/7 in their 20 overs. A notable partnership of 65 runs between Tristan Stubbs (38 runs off 31 balls, including one four and two sixes) and Sameer Rizvi (40* off 24 balls, featuring four sixes) helped DC reach a competitive total.
During the power play, Akeal Hosein bowled three overs, allowing only 15 runs and claiming the vital wicket of KL Rahul. DC managed just 37 runs in their first six overs while losing two wickets.
Since the start of 2023, Akeal has emerged as a leading spinner in T20 matches, amassing 75 wickets at an average of 31.2 and a strike rate of 25.6, with an economy rate of 7.3 and a dot-ball percentage of 47. The only other spinners to surpass 50 wickets in this phase are Maheesh Theekshana (55) and Imad Wasim (52).
In five matches this season, Akeal has secured seven wickets at an average of 18.28, including a standout performance of 4/17 against Mumbai Indians (MI), with an economy rate of 7.24.
Noor Ahmed also played a crucial role during the middle overs, where DC could have mounted a counter-attack. He delivered an impressive spell of 2/22 in three overs, taking the wickets of Nitish Rana and Karun Nair.
Since 2025, Noor has been a formidable presence in the IPL's middle overs (overs 7 to 15), claiming 26 wickets at an average of 20.23 and a strike rate of 15.2, with an economy rate of 7.96 and a dot-ball percentage of 30.5. RCB's Krunal Pandya is the only other bowler with over 20 wickets in this phase (21) during the same timeframe.
This season, Noor has taken 11 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 27.45, with best figures of 3/21 and an economy rate of 8.38.
Both bowlers ensured that DC's top four batsmen - Pathum Nissanka (19), KL Rahul (12), Nitish Rana (15), and Karun Nair (13) - failed to convert their starts, marking a rare occurrence in IPL history where each of the top four scored in double digits but none reached 20. The first instance was also by DC against Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK) in 2011.
Currently, DC is struggling in the IPL, having lost 21 wickets and facing a dot-ball percentage of 46.4. Their average runs per wicket stands at a disappointing 23.85, which is not reflective of the potential their versatile top-order possesses. Their run-rate is also modest at 8.35.
