CSK's Opening Match Preview

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are preparing to face the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their first match of IPL 2026 at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium located in Barsapara, Guwahati. This season, CSK will showcase a revamped squad following significant changes made during the IPL 2026 auction. A key addition to the team is Sanju Samson, who was acquired in a trade that sent Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to RR. Samson is expected to take the opening position in the batting lineup.

While Ruturaj Gaikwad is typically seen as a prime candidate to partner with Samson at the top of the order, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has suggested a different approach. Due to a side strain, Dewald Brevis will miss the match against RR. On his YouTube channel, Chopra recommended that CSK should consider opening with Ayush Mhatre alongside Sanju Samson, allowing Gaikwad to bat at number three. This strategy would strengthen the middle order, which includes Urvil Patel, Sarfaraz Khan, and Shuvam Dube.

Chopra emphasized the need for a tactical shift, stating, “With Brevis absent, your playing XI will inevitably change, and so should your batting order. Ruturaj Gaikwad shouldn’t open with Sanju Samson. Instead, have Ayush Mhatre open with Samson and move Ruturaj to No. 3. It would be a mistake to keep Ruturaj and Sanju as openers.” He further noted that if they stick to the original plan, the batting order would lack experience after the openers, with Dube being the only senior player left.

Injury Concerns for CSK

CSK's Worrying Injury List

CSK is currently facing a troubling injury situation. Nathan Ellis has already been ruled out for the entire season due to injury, and his replacement, Spencer Johnson, is also sidelined. Additionally, MS Dhoni will miss the initial matches of the tournament, and now Dewald Brevis has been confirmed as unavailable. Aakash Chopra expressed his concerns regarding this extensive injury list.

Chopra remarked, “The significant issue is that Dewald Brevis is also out. It appears he will miss the first three or four matches. Spencer Johnson is not available either. You brought in an injured player to replace another injured player. Nathan Ellis is already out, and MS Dhoni will be absent for two weeks. Without a single ball bowled, your challenges are already piling up.”
