On September 8, Shubman Gill, the captain of India's Test and ODI teams, celebrated his 27th birthday, marking a significant point in his evolution from a promising young talent to a reliable leader.
Throughout his career, Gill has become an integral part of India's batting lineup while embracing his leadership responsibilities.
Born in Fazilka, Punjab, on September 8, 1999, Gill's ascent in cricket has been characterized by remarkable consistency across various formats. He first gained attention as the Player of the Tournament during India's triumphant 2018 Under-19 World Cup campaign, subsequently securing his place in the senior national team.
The elegant opener is recognized for being the fastest player in ODI history to achieve both 2,000 and 2,500 runs, as well as the youngest player to score a double century in ODIs.
Gill made his ODI debut in 2019, but it was during his inaugural Test series in Australia in 2020-21 that he truly made his mark. He scored 45 and 35 on his debut at the MCG, followed by a half-century in Sydney, and a remarkable 91 in India's thrilling series-clinching victory at the Gabba, as reported by Cricinfo.
His first Test century came in Chattogram the following year. Just a month later, at the age of 23, Gill became the youngest player to score an ODI double-century, hitting 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand. He also played a pivotal role in India's journey to the 2023 World Cup final, amassing over 350 runs, and was part of the squad that clinched the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Gill significantly contributed to India's 4-1 Test series victory over England at home in 2024, scoring centuries in Visakhapatnam and Dharamsala, a 91 in Rajkot, and a crucial 52 in the second innings under tough conditions in Ranchi.
In the IPL, Gill took over as captain of the Gujarat Titans in 2024 after Hardik Pandya's exit, leading the team to the playoffs the following season. He had a stellar performance in the 2025 season, scoring 650 runs, the fourth-highest that year, and excelled even further in 2026 with 732 runs, the second-highest total behind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, Gill was appointed as India's Test captain for the 2025 tour of England.
He had an outstanding Test series against England, accumulating 754 runs at an impressive average of 75.40, which included four centuries and a personal best of 269. His performance helped India secure a 2-2 draw away from home, marking the second-highest run tally by a captain in a Test series, only behind the legendary Don Bradman's 810 runs in the 1936-37 Ashes.
Recently, Gill led India to a 1-0 victory in a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Overall, Gill has established an impressive record across formats, solidifying his status as one of India's top batters. In 43 Tests, he has scored 3,043 runs at an average of 43.47, including 11 centuries and nine fifties.
His ODI statistics are even more remarkable, with 3,379 runs from 67 matches at an exceptional average of 60.33, featuring nine centuries and 20 half-centuries, with a personal best of 208.
In T20Is, Gill has amassed 869 runs in 36 matches at a strike rate of 138.59, including one century.
