Carlos Alcaraz Aims to Reclaim No. 1 Ranking at Barcelona Open
Alcaraz's Quest for the Top Spot
Barcelona [Spain], April 14: Following his defeat to Jannik Sinner at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost his top ranking, Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is set to compete at the Barcelona Open this week, hoping to regain his position.
Currently ranked second in the ATP standings, Alcaraz is the top seed in this ATP 500 clay court event and is vying for his third title, having previously won in 2022 and 2023. His recent loss to Sinner in the Monte Carlo final marked the end of his 66-week reign at the top.
Last year, Alcaraz reached the final in Barcelona but was defeated by Holger Rune. He is defending 330 ATP points this week, while Sinner is not participating in the tournament.
If Alcaraz wins his opening match against Otto Virtanen on Tuesday, he will face either Tomas Machac or Sebastian Baez in the second round. He is also projected to meet Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals and Alex de Minaur in the semifinals. Lorenzo Musetti, ranked ninth in the world, is the second seed in the tournament. To reclaim the top ranking, Alcaraz must win the tournament.
“I wouldn’t miss Sinner this week,” Alcaraz stated ahead of his first ATP Head2Head match against Virtanen. “I know I need to win here to get back to number one. The rivalry with Jannik is exciting and adds extra motivation,” he added.
Should Alcaraz successfully return to the number one spot, he will equal Sinner's record of 67 weeks at the top and head into the Madrid Open as the world number one. The Madrid Open, which begins on April 22, will see both players with no points to defend.
Alcaraz has 3,000 points to defend at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome and the French Open, both of which he won in 2025. In contrast, Sinner will need to defend 1,950 points, having lost to Alcaraz in the finals of both tournaments last year.
