New York [US], September 3: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz showcased his prowess in the 2026 US Open, defeating Jaime Faria with a score of 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the men's singles.
In a post-match interview shared by JioStar, Alcaraz reflected on his performance, particularly how he adjusted after losing the first set. He emphasized the tactical shifts he made and shared his thoughts on competing at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“The first set was a bit of an adjustment for me. I felt I was playing well and had some great points, but I rushed through it, playing shorter points. I realized I needed to focus on longer rallies, be patient during the initial shots, and then go for the point. After that realization, everything fell into place,” Alcaraz explained.
Discussing his game plan adjustments from the second set onward, he noted, “My team and I felt I should play more cross-court shots initially. I think my opponent made a few mistakes, including double faults, which allowed me to secure an early break. This helped me play more calmly and regain control of the match.”
Alcaraz expressed his excitement about playing in front of the vibrant New York crowd, stating, “It’s incredible to compete here at Arthur Ashe during a night session with such enthusiastic fans. I thrive on that energy and aim to make the match enjoyable for them. I can’t wait to return for the next round and feel that warmth again.”
A two-time US Open champion, Alcaraz first claimed the title in 2022 and repeated his success in 2025. Earlier this year, he made history as the youngest player to achieve a Career Grand Slam at just 22 years old.
This victory marked Alcaraz's 26th main-draw win at the US Open, the highest number he has achieved at any Grand Slam event.
Next, Alcaraz will face China's Wu Yibing, who triumphed over Australia's James Duckworth with a score of 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. Alcaraz currently leads their head-to-head record 1-0, with their previous encounter taking place in Shanghai in 2024.
