Alcaraz Makes Strong Comeback

Barcelona [Spain], April 14: Carlos Alcaraz made a remarkable recovery from his recent defeat in the Monte Carlo final against Jannik Sinner, defeating Finland's Otto Virtanen with a score of 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday, thereby securing his place in the second round of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

Currently holding the No. 2 position in the ATP Rankings after losing the top rank to Sinner, the 22-year-old Spaniard has the opportunity to regain the World No. 1 title if he clinches the championship in Barcelona. Alcaraz's next opponent will be Tomas Machac, who triumphed over Sebastian Baez with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

"It feels fantastic to be back and to achieve another victory in front of my fans in Barcelona; it means a lot to me. This morning marked my first practice here to adjust to the conditions. They differ from Monte Carlo, but overall, I am very pleased with my performance," Alcaraz stated, as reported by the ATP tour website.

Alcaraz has fond memories of the ATP 500 clay-court tournament, having won the title in both 2022 and 2023. He also reached the finals last year but was defeated by Denmark's Holger Rune. This week, Alcaraz is aiming for his third title of the season after achieving a Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open and winning the ATP 500 event in Doha.

After narrowly losing to rival Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo final, Alcaraz is eager to return to his winning ways in Barcelona this week.

Sinner has now improved his record to 7-10 in their ATP Head2Head encounters, marking his second victory against Alcaraz on clay.

In other matches on Day 2 of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, second seed Lorenzo Musetti secured his first tour-level win since the Australian Open in January by defeating Spanish wild card Martin Landaluce 7-5, 6-2.
