Carlo Ancelotti Faces Tough Decision on Neymar's Inclusion for FIFA World Cup 2026
Ancelotti's Dilemma Over Neymar's World Cup Spot
Brasilia [Brazil], May 13: Brazil's head coach Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged that choosing whether to include Neymar in the final roster for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is a challenging task, despite the forward's recent resurgence since rejoining Santos FC.
The 34-year-old has been listed in Brazil's provisional squad of 55 players, with Ancelotti expected to finalize the team to 26 on May 18. Neymar's ongoing injury issues and a tough period at Al Hilal have raised questions about his international career, although his recent performances at Santos have been promising.
In an exclusive interview, Ancelotti stated, "When making selections, numerous factors must be considered." He emphasized Neymar's significance to the national team due to his exceptional talent. "He has faced challenges but is diligently working on his recovery. His recent improvements and consistent play are encouraging. This decision is not straightforward for me. We have been assessing all players, including Neymar, for the past year," Ancelotti elaborated.
The coach also highlighted the importance of team dynamics in his final decision, noting Neymar's popularity among teammates. "I am aware that Neymar is well-liked, not just by fans but also by the players," he remarked.
"This is a crucial factor, as we must consider the atmosphere surrounding Neymar's potential selection. I won't create unnecessary tension in the locker room. He is cherished by everyone, and it's natural for players to share their views. I appreciate all the feedback, but ultimately, the decision rests with me," he added.
Ancelotti assured that external pressures from fans and media would not sway his final choice, asserting that the internal environment within the Brazil camp remains stable, regardless of Neymar's status.
"I don't think the internal dynamics will be affected by any player’s inclusion," he stated. "The atmosphere is positive and calm, and it will stay that way, regardless of who is selected. However, I cannot control outside opinions or media narratives. The internal environment is managed and will remain so, with or without Neymar. This is crucial because I know that if Neymar is part of the squad, the group will be harmonious, given his popularity," he continued.
Additionally, Ancelotti pointed out the tactical and physical requirements at the international level, while recognizing Neymar's recent improvements in fitness and performance. "He has significantly enhanced his physical condition in recent matches and has delivered strong performances," Ancelotti noted.
"His fitness has improved, allowing him to sustain high intensity throughout games. However, every match is different. I am confident in my decision-making, as I am not under any pressure to include Neymar. I have complete autonomy, and my choice will be entirely professional, focusing solely on his football performance. While assembling a perfect team is impossible, I aim to create a squad with fewer mistakes than others might make. I am certain of that," he concluded.
