Cape Verde Shocks Spain with Goalless Draw in FIFA World Cup Upset
Cape Verde's Stunning Performance Against Spain
Atlanta [US], June 16: In a remarkable turn of events at the FIFA World Cup, debutants Cape Verde managed to hold the highly-ranked Spain, currently the European Champions, to a goalless draw. This match, held in Atlanta on Monday, showcased an impressive defensive strategy from the underdogs.
Despite being one of the smallest nations by population to participate in the tournament, Cape Verde's defense was tenacious, thwarting Spain's 27 attempts on goal without conceding. This marked Spain's joint-highest number of shots in a World Cup match without scoring, equaling their performance against Paraguay in 1998, which also ended in a stalemate.
The standout player for Cape Verde was undoubtedly their 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who made seven crucial saves, including three in a rapid succession during the first half. He expertly deflected Mikel Oyarazabal's header, caught Ferran Torres' close-range shot, and denied efforts from Aymeric Laporte, Mikel Merino, and Marc Cucurella, earning him the 'Player of the Match' title. Vozinha also made history as the oldest player to feature in Cape Verde's World Cup debut.
In a nail-biting moment, Shamrock Rovers' Pico Lopes executed a vital block in the 88th minute, preventing Oyarazabal from scoring what could have been a last-minute winner. Cape Verde also had their chances, with Diney Borges' shot being thwarted by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Spain's frustration continued as Torres' strike hit the post, adding to their missed opportunities. Despite introducing young talent Lamine Yamal, Spain struggled to find the net, firing 12 shots in the first half alone without success.
This result means Spain has now gone four consecutive World Cup matches without a victory, matching their longest winless streak from 1982 to 1986. While they secured a point from this match, they will need to regroup ahead of their upcoming match against Saudi Arabia on June 21.
