Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha to Reunite with Mother for World Cup Match
Emotional Reunion Ahead of World Cup Clash
In Miami, Florida, Cape Verde's goalkeeper Josimar 'Vozinha' Dias is set to have a heartfelt reunion with his mother, thanks to expedited arrangements by U.S. authorities. This comes after Vozinha's emotional remarks following his team's historic draw against Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The announcement was made by Hakeem Jeffries, the U.S. House Democratic Leader, who confirmed that collaborative efforts involving the U.S. State Department, Cape Verde's government, and FIFA have enabled Vozinha's mother to travel to the U.S. for the upcoming match against Uruguay on Sunday.
Jeffries shared the news on social media platform X, stating, "Star Cape Verdean goalkeeper Vozinha and his mother will be reunited in Miami in time for the match on Sunday. Thank you to Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the government of Cabo Verde, and FIFA for working together to make this happen."
In his statement, Jeffries elaborated on the actions taken to resolve the situation after it was revealed that Vozinha's mother could not attend Cape Verde's World Cup debut due to visa issues.
"Following an incredible performance by goalkeeper Josimar 'Vozinha' Dias, the Cabo Verde national team stunned the world by holding Spain to a draw during their World Cup debut. Cape Verdeans in the U.S. and around the world celebrated the underdog spirit of the Blue Sharks, but the joy was overshadowed when Vozinha tearfully shared that his mother couldn't witness his historic moment due to visa complications. No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history," the statement read.
"Upon learning of this, I contacted Secretary of State Marco Rubio and urged the State Department to do everything possible to ensure his mother could attend Cabo Verde's next match. I am pleased to announce that Vozinha's mother will be able to secure a visa in time for their game this Sunday against Uruguay. All fees have been waived in accordance with official policy. Travel arrangements are now being made for their reunion in Miami," the statement continued.
"I extend my gratitude to Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the government of Cabo Verde, and FIFA for their collaboration in making this possible," the statement concluded.
This announcement follows Vozinha's standout performance in Cape Verde's surprising 0-0 draw against Spain in Atlanta, one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper made several remarkable saves, frustrating the reigning European champions, who attempted 27 shots without scoring—a record for the most shots in a World Cup match without a goal.
Vozinha was named Player of the Match after denying attempts from players like Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres, securing a significant point for the island nation.
After the match, Vozinha expressed his emotions regarding the absence of family members in the stands, stating, "I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents, who could not be there. They passed away a few years ago. My mum could not be here either due to a visa issue and the costs involved. We couldn't manage this in time."
He also expressed gratitude to supporters back home after one of the most memorable moments in Cape Verdean football history, saying, "This is a message of thanks to everyone in Cape Verde. We are very happy after this; this group of players has worked hard to experience this moment. It’s a day to be proud and satisfied."
As Cape Verde, one of the smallest nations to compete in a FIFA World Cup, prepares for their next match against Uruguay, Vozinha is expected to have his mother cheering from the stands as the Blue Sharks continue their historic journey.
